She is the author ofUnequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life which won a distinguished publication award from the Sociology of Family, Sociology of Childhood, and Sociology of Culture sections of the American Sociological Association. Berkeley: University of California Press. A second edition of Unequal Childhoods, with 100 new pages, was published in 2011; it provides a follow-up of the children into adulthood. The families she describes in the book each fall very firmly on one or the other of these types, and the division is a clear class division. However, I recently read a book recommended to me by someone on this blog –Unequal childhoods: Class, Race and Family Life — and it fit our school EXACTLY. The greatest value of the book is in displaying so much of the texture of individual family lives; displaying and making sense of the texture of real human interactions is what the best ethnographies do, and this is one of the best ethnographies. Culture and class strongly determine educational progress. (2003) Unequal childhoods: class, race, and family life. In that world the productions of the human brain appear as independent beings endowed with life, and entering into relation both with one another and the human race. Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life by Annette Lareau is one of those must-read books that describes society while focusing on only one aspect of society: parenting among different social classes. Unequal childhoods: Class, race and family life.
